This was a gift for my Western loving S/O, who really enjoyed the book.
This book set my imagination on fire! I really enjoyed it and it was so much fun to read! Just wonderful!
Wasn't what I was hoping for.
If you love the western mountains you will love The Wild Man stories. Every chapter was a great story by itself. Told in the colorfull language of the mountain men
Besides describing the usual gripping adventures of the Mt. Men, Indians, and animals, the writer is flawless in his use of the English language, but in almost comical contrast to the unlettered Trapper-speech (which conveyed clear meaning in few words).
I have read quite a few of R.M. Ballantyne's books and this one rates as one of his better books. Ballantyne is probably known as the author of 'Coral Island' - a timeless classic. Ballantyne tends to focus on stories involving shipwreck and pioneers. This story is about trappers and hunters in the Rocky Mountains at the time before there were any settlements near to it. American trappers and hunters were visiting the hunting grounds at the same time that the American Indians were. Needless to say that this lead to conflict between the two groups. This book tells of how heroism carried the day and solves a mystery at the same time.
Not knowing what to expect from this title, I found myself falling into the story right away. Rip-roaring adventure, beautiful descriptions, great characters - loved this book. Enjoyed the easy-going writing style and it made me think about how exciting the West must have been for courageous, daring adventurers in the 1800's. Looking for more titles by this author.
